Senior Vice President and Global Design Director, EXP

Thomas Hoepf, FAIA, is Senior Vice President and Global Design Director at EXP. His experience includes a broad range of project types for public and private clients, with a focus on major modernizations that transform underperforming buildings. As design leader, Tom’s approach is guided by the principle that design excellence is an outcome of an integrated and collaborative process involving not just architects, but also engineers, stakeholders and, where possible, constructors. To that end he leads a multi-disciplined team, is flexible and open to creative input, and builds consensus among team members to maintain vision and quality through the duration of the project.

Tom’s projects have won numerous design awards, including 37 National, Regional and Local AIA Design Excellence Awards, and have been widely published. He received the AIA Chicago Young Architect Award, and under his design leadership, EXP received the AIA Chicago Firm of the Year Award. Tom is a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects, a GSA National Design Excellence Peer, a member of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Justice, and has served on the Board of Directors for both AIA Illinois and AIA Chicago, as well as Chair of the AIA Chicago Design Committee, Young Architects Committee and the Chicago Architectural Club. He is an advocate for mentorship of emerging professionals through his long-time participation in the AIA Chicago Bridge Mentorship program, as mentor for the University of Illinois Chicago’s Engineering Capstone Studio Project and as Adjunct Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he teaches graduate design studio.
