WORKSHOP: Innovative Solutions Using Rengerative & Biomaterials
29 Oct 2025
Building Solutions & Materials (Workshop 2)
AIA CES Workshops
This workshop outlines a comprehensive framework for achieving embodied carbon reductions through sustainable procurement strategies, with a focus on incorporating innovative regenerative biomaterials. The framework begins by identifying key "material hot spots"— defined as the largest material types found within the building (e.g., insulation, steel, aluminum, and concrete). We will then explore high-impact products - those used in smaller quantities within the building but possessing low manufacturing GWP and high biogenic carbon properties, helping to balance the scale and induce embodied carbon reduction. This includes technologies such as carbon-sequestering aggregates in concrete and bio-based facade alternatives for architectural components. Most importantly, the framework will provide actionable steps for the industry to reduce embodied carbon in future projects.
