WORKSHOP: Connected Healthcare Continuum: Where AI Meets Empathy

30 Oct 2025
Architecture & Design (Workshop 1) AIA CES Workshops

The healthcare continuum is at a pivotal moment to transform care for patients, their families, and caregivers. Thoughtful design has a significant impact on this experience and the resulting health outcomes. Physical space that supports quality of care also has a positive effect on staff wellbeing, productivity, retention, and does no harm.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the healthcare experience, optimizing workflows, streamlining diagnoses, and expanding access to information. But in the race toward innovation, something human is at risk of being lost. Many AI-driven systems are designed for efficiency, not empathy — often replacing personal connection with automation and reducing patients to data points. While technology can enhance care, it must not come at the expense of compassion. As AI continues to evolve, we must intentionally design it to support—not supplant—the human relationships at the heart of healing. The future of healthcare depends not just on what AI can do, but how well it can serve real people with dignity, understanding, and care.

This session focuses on how planning and human-centered processes, when integrated with AI, can build empathy in a facility and translate to an experience that is more equitable, sensitive to social barriers, and ultimately kinder to those providing and receiving care.
