Understanding Sustainability in AEC

Given your experience in marketing and sales within the AEC sector, how do you define sustainability in construction, and why do you think it is crucial for the industry in Chicago?

"To me, sustainability in construction is about more than green materials or certifications—it’s about creating buildings that are resilient, efficient, and valuable throughout their lifecycle. In a city like Chicago, with its extreme weather and ambitious climate goals, sustainable practices are no longer optional, they’re essential. Even small decisions, like choosing electric grills over gas, contribute to reduced emissions, lower long-term operating costs, and healthier communities. When the industry embraces these shifts, we’re not just building projects—we’re building a more resilient and future-ready Chicago."

Innovative Solutions

In your experience with extending the life of asphalt roofs, can you share insights on how innovative roofing products contribute to sustainability in construction? Specifically, how do they help reduce waste and promote more environmentally friendly practices in the industry?

"Sustainability in construction often comes down to smart choices that reduce waste and extend value. Just as innovative roofing products keep asphalt out of landfills and improve efficiency."

Market Trends

From your perspective, what current market trends do you see shaping the future of sustainable construction in Chicago? How can companies adapt to these trends to remain competitive?

"In Chicago, sustainability in construction is being shaped by low-carbon materials, digital tools like AI and BIM, modular building methods, and the rising demand for all-electric, greener homes. Companies that adapt by adopting innovative products—whether it’s low-carbon concrete, green roofs, or even electric grills—will not only reduce environmental impact but also stay competitive in a market where resilience and efficiency are quickly becoming the standard."

Collaboration and Partnerships

You've been involved with organizations that prioritize sustainability. How important is collaboration among different stakeholders (e.g., manufacturers, developers, consumers) in achieving sustainability goals in construction?

"Collaboration is absolutely critical to achieving sustainability in construction. No one person can move the needle alone. When manufacturers innovate with greener products, developers integrate them into resilient designs, and consumers embrace choices the impact multiplies. True progress comes from aligning goals across the supply chain."

Customer Education

With your background in sales and customer experience, what strategies do you believe are most effective in educating clients about the importance of sustainable practices in construction? How can this knowledge influence their purchasing decisions?

"The most effective strategy is connecting sustainability to what matters most to the client: cost savings, long-term value, and community impact. Education works best: showing how sustainable products lower operating costs, extend asset life, and create healthier spaces."

In closing, this interview with Shelly Cassin highlights the critical role that sales professionals play in advancing sustainability within the construction industry. Shelly emphasizes that sustainability goes beyond just using green materials; it involves creating resilient and efficient buildings that contribute positively to communities. Her insights into innovative roofing solutions and market trends illustrate how smart choices can reduce waste and enhance the value of construction projects. Moreover, the importance of collaboration among stakeholders—manufacturers, developers, and consumers—cannot be overstated. As Shelly points out, true progress in sustainability emerges when all parties align their goals and work together.
